Special Effects in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope?
What significance did the special effects have on Star Wars: A New Hope in it becoming one of the best movies ever made?And/Or what long term effects did the special effects in Star Wars: A New Hope have.

Star Wars, in it’s un-altered, un-"improved", original form change everything about visual entertainment in the USA.

At a time when movie attendance figures were stagnating (or dropping), Star Wars reintroduced the concept of a movie as an "event". The moviegoers lined up for blocks to pay their money to see the film over and over again served as a model for other epic adventure movies in the years to come. The idea of a summer blockbuster movie that would earn zillions of dollars and finance the studios whole year riginated with Star Wars.

Movies like "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Back to the Future" and even "Ghostbusters" could not have happened had Star Wars not proven the concept.

George Lucas invented the "special effects" industry out of thin air. The cameras and computers that generate modern special effects did not exist before Lucas started Star Wars.

Now, the "special effects" segment of the moviemaking industry earns billions of dollars a year. As computers increased in power, the Lucas started investing in computer imagery, and special effects became a "must-have" staple in movies that would never have had budget for such effects before.

Visual effects that either could not have been produced, or would have been too expensive to consider can now be rendered in digital environments. Just about every segment of the entertainment industry makes use of digital imagery. Movies, television shows, even commercials display fantastic imagery once impossible to produce. Effects that even just a few years ago would have cost millions now routinely serve to pitch pizzas and sodas on television.

An entire industry blossomed as a mere subset of the fx industry. As computers became more powerful, digitally-produced "cartoons" emerged. These can be produced so quickly and cheaply that traditionally-hand drawn and inked animated films have all but disappeared. Digital cartoons even supplanting traditional "cheap" television animation.

Digital cable TV, digital movie projection systems, iPods,Tivo devices, Internet -streaming video, and more would not exist.

I know this is long-winded, but I have not really even scratched the surface of the impact Star Wars had on the world at large…

Star Wars !V led to the creation of ILM, which has made special effects for tons of Hollywood movies since then. Also, some movies (2001: A Space Odyssey, for instance) had great special effects before Star Wars, but not as many as often.

I think that movie was so ahead of its time in the late 70s that it is destined to have a place in film history. Not only was it full of excitement, the special affects were amazing. Although it is common place now…Blowing up a planet was really neat!

Not to mention the fact tha directors where now free to ask for more money to create better special affects.
